February 10 is the first day of the Lunar New Year, marking the the beginning of the lunar calendar. Also known as the Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival, this celebration is based around the Chinese zodiac, a twelve-year cycle in which each year is linked to a symbolic animal that is meant to embody its traits and characteristics. The Chinese zodiac also features five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—that cycle through each animal sign, making this year the year of the wood dragon, a combination that only happens once every sixty years. The dragon embodies power, strength, and good fortune, while the wood element adds a layer of depth with its associations of growth, flexibility, and kindness.

The last year of the wood dragon was in 1964. As we look ahead to our own modern integration of these returning energies, I thought it might be interesting to see what sort of events were paramount in shaping that year. Here is just a sampling of some of the biggest headlines of 1964:

●      Civil Rights Act of 1964: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a monumental piece of legislation in the United States, signed into law by US President Lyndon B. Johnson. ●      Warren Commission Report: Who killed JFK? Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the final weeks of 1963, the Warren Commission was tasked with investigating the events. The Commission’s report, released in 1964, concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination, although it has been a subject of ongoing debate and conspiracy theories ever since.

●      Free Speech Movement: The Free Speech Movement (FSM) emerged at the University of California, Berkeley, as students protested restrictions on political activities on campus. The movement advocated for free speech rights and became a catalyst for student activism across the United States during the 1960s. Berkeley rebels shouted, “Give us our voice!” The Free Speech Movement wasn’t just about words; it was a rebellion, a revolution, and a whole lot of students saying, “We’re not gonna take it!”

●      Ford Mustang Debuts: Vroom, vroom! Ford unleashed the Mustang, the James Dean of cars. Sleek, sexy, and rebellious—the Mustang galloped into our hearts and created a whole new lane for “pony cars.” The Mustang’s stylish design, affordability, and performance options contributed to its immediate success and enduring popularity.

●      Cassius Clay becomes Muhammad Ali: Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee! In 1964, boxer Cassius Clay, who had recently won the world heavyweight title, announced his conversion to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. This decision marked a significant moment in both sports and cultural history. This guy wasn’t just a knockout in the ring; he was also a poet, a provocateur, and an icon.

●      Ratification of the 24th Amendment: Out with poll taxes, in with democracy! ●      The Good Friday Earthquake: There was a whole lotta shakin’ goin on, as March 27, 1964, saw the most powerful earthquake in North American history, coming in at 9.2 on the Richter scale. Lasting 4 minutes and 38 seconds, the deadly quake was centered in southeastern Alaska and unleashed a colossal 200,000 megatons of energy, destroying buildings and infrastructure in Anchorage and far beyond.

It was a year marked by innovation as well as intense protests and riots that were centered around the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and Free Speech movements.
