    By Elizabeth Mulloy

During the Second World War, a group of airmen risk their lives with the 100th Bomb Group, a brotherhood forged by courage, loss, and triumph.

Every decade brings forth a new miniseries dedicated to recounting the events of the Second World War. In the 2000s it was Band of Brothers, a cinematic masterpiece chronicling the challenges faced by E Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. In the 2010s it was The Pacific, a less focused but harrowing look at the Pacific Theater through the eyes of three Marines of the 1st Marine Battalion. Now in the 2020s, it is Masters of the Air, an intimate look at the 100th Bombardier Group of the US Army Air Force whose staggering loss of life led to it being dubbed, “The Bloody Hundredth”. Given the track record of these series being co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, one would expect nothing short of a masterpiece. Sadly, Masters of the Air struggles to maintain altitude as it is constantly on the verge of stalling.

    [image] masters2

The series launches with gripping intensity as we shadow three members of the Bloody Hundredth during their initial weeks of aerial combat. What begins with excitement swiftly morphs into sheer horror as they confront the Nazi Regime head-on. The aerial combat sequences are both exhilarating and harrowing, capturing the unsettling juxtaposition of the cold, claustrophobic confines of the B-17 and the vulnerability of the bombers in combat. These scenes are so vividly portrayed that they induce a visceral reaction, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats and marveling at the courage of these men undertaking what seems like suicide missions. Despite some questionable visual effects, these moments represent the series at its zenith. Then, as silence falls and only screams pierce the air, viewers are confronted with the stark reality of war in its most harrowing form.

However, this robust momentum abruptly stalls just shy of the series midpoint, as any semblance of narrative structure and pacing dissipates. The storyline becomes bloated with an excess of characters and side plots that are never adequately developed. Many of these subplots are either magically resolved by the next episode or are dropped entirely by the narrative. Some of these threads could have flourished if given dedicated episodes rather than a mere 10-minute snippet. For example, an entire episode could have been devoted to the harrowing journey of shot-down airmen making their escape out of Nazi-controlled Europe to evade capture. Or a couple of episodes to explore the relationship between the Bloody Hundreth and the Tuskegee Airmen, rather than introducing the Tuskegee Airmen in episode eight out of a nine-episode series.

Unfortunately, due to the series' reluctance to allow these narratives room to breathe, they ultimately feel like filler. Significant events such as D-Day are glossed over entirely, missing valuable opportunities to bring history to life. While the series does manage to tie things together satisfactorily in the final episode, it struggles to maintain engagement with its disjointed narrative throughout.

Another factor contributing to the difficulty in remaining engaged with the show was the lack of depth in each character, rendering them as mere caricatures of stereotypical World War II soldiers. Characters were a cornerstone of both Band of Brothers and The Pacific, remembered for their intricate portrayal of soldiers facing the turmoil of war with depth and authenticity. In Masters of the Air, the cast strives to inject life into their one-dimensional roles, yet they are hindered by the limitations of their material. Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and especially Anthony Boyle, deliver commendable performances, one can’t help but wonder how much more impactful their portrayal would have been with fully realized characters.

In essence, Masters of the Air delivers a captivating yet profoundly flawed depiction of the 100th Bombardier Group's tumultuous journey. While the series adeptly captures the raw intensity of aerial combat and provides poignant insights into the sacrifices of its courageous subjects, it stumbles significantly in its storytelling, character depth, and pacing. Despite a talented ensemble cast, the series fails to capitalize on its potential as it gets lost in the clouds. The show is available to stream on Apple TV+.

Jennie Reed Elementary is due for improvements and safety upgrades, thanks to a 2020 bond. The work will start in summer 2025, and the renovated school is set to open in fall 2026. The project includes moving the main entrance and administration offices to create a safer entry and waiting area for visitors.

Built in 1950, the school currently has limited visibility for staff to receive visitors safely. To fix this, new cameras, video intercom systems, and security monitoring systems will be installed. These upgrades are part of Tacoma Public Schools' ongoing work to improve safety in all local schools.

Reed will also get upgrades to its ADA, HVAC, plumbing, roofing, lighting, and flooring systems. These changes aim to create a better learning environment for students and staff.

This spring, WA Patriot Construction and Ferguson Architecture will work with a Design Advisory Committee, made up of Reed teachers, families, and community members. This committee will give feedback on the school's renovation, ensuring the upgrades meet the community's needs.

The project's schedule is as follows: Design phase from April 2024 to January 2025, construction from June 2025 to August 2026, and completion by October 2026. This means the school will be ready to welcome students and staff in its renovated building by fall 2026.

  • The Tacoma City Council in Washington has passed a resolution to investigate ways to boost deconstruction and salvage work in the city. The resolution, initiated by At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker, instructs the City Manager to develop a range of options, along with their costs, to improve deconstruction and salvage efforts. The aim is to safeguard the environment and foster green economic growth. The Infrastructure, Planning and Sustainability Committee will review these options by May 22, 2024.

Council Member Walker highlighted the need to rethink the removal of existing structures and the disposal of building materials. She pointed out that the current practice of demolishing buildings and disposing of the materials in landfills is not sustainable and contradicts the city's Climate Action Plan.

Deconstruction is the process of systematically dismantling buildings to maximize material reuse, while salvage is the extraction of valuable or reusable surface-level materials. Deconstruction has several advantages over demolition, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, less waste disposal, more job opportunities, decreased stormwater pollution, and better use of valuable building materials.

Deconstruction can also mitigate the negative effects of demolition by increasing the chance of finding materials containing lead and asbestos for safe removal and disposal. It also improves air quality by reducing air pollution and dust during demolition. Reusing materials from historic buildings allows neighborhoods to maintain visual consistency by incorporating reusable materials into new structures.

The resolution asks the City Manager to provide options and costs for five key areas. These are: establishing reliable salvage assessments; encouraging deconstruction projects and material reuse; promoting deconstruction of City-owned buildings; supporting workforce development for deconstruction; and offering City assistance for storage of salvaged and deconstructed materials.

  • Tacoma’s Mayor Victoria Woodards is changing the format of this year's State of the City address. Rather than giving a formal speech, she's inviting residents to voice their concerns and priorities directly to the City. The event is scheduled for March 28, from 6:30 – 8 PM at Silas High School in Tacoma.

Feedback stations will be set up at the event, each focusing on different topics like homelessness, environmental health, housing, community safety, and the City’s budget. The goal is to encourage a more inclusive dialogue.

The feedback collected at the event will be used to guide a series of discussions throughout the summer. These discussions will address the concerns raised by the community and outline what actions the Mayor, City Council, and City employees are taking.

More information about the March 28 event will be available on the City of Tacoma’s website and social media. Residents with questions can reach out to the Office of the Mayor.

Mayor Woodards' decision indicates a shift towards a more community-focused approach to governance, highlighting the importance of addressing residents' concerns.

A mixed-use development in Tacoma is moving forward as construction is slated to begin sometime this year. The project, known as Aviva Crossing, is spearheaded by the property owner Tacoma Housing Authority and is planned to bring hundreds of apartments to the city. According to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal, groundbreaking on the first building in the planned development is anticipated to take place this year.

Located at 1620 S Mildred St., Aviva Crossing is situated within James Center North, a commercial center positioned at the intersection of 19th and Mildred and across from both the Tacoma Community College campus and Pierce Transit Center. The site is within walking distance of retail, finance and various other services as well as several schools. James Center North spans 6.92 acres across five parcels, with 62,000 square feet of commercial retail space that is 52 percent occupied.

“JCN Aviva Crossing is within a Community Crossroads Center, as designated by Pierce County and the City of Tacoma,” according to THA’s website. “This will promote opportunity for a mix of uses and housing types with connections to recreational, cultural, and environmental amenities.”

The planning process for this project is ongoing, with the Port and TPS regularly engaging with Community Advisory Committees.

The project team has shared initial designs for the Maritime 253 Skills Center, developed by TCF Architecture. These designs are the result of several months of public input. The first phase of the Maritime 253 Skills Center project aims to create a top-tier educational facility with a focus on Career and Technical Education (CTE) skills.

The planning process will continue to involve the community to shape the future of the site. This ongoing engagement is key to the project's development, ensuring that the community's needs and ideas are reflected in the final design.

A public open house will take place on May 7, from 4-6 p.m., at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock Street, Tacoma. This event will allow the public to learn more about the project and provide additional input.

The project is still in the planning phase, with continued community involvement and a public open house on May 7.
