This seems obvious but it’s time someone said it out loud

BY ANGELA JOSSY

You might think you know us, and maybe you do, but I don’t think you know the extent of the revolution we are starting.

It’s time for all of us to acknowledge some things that we all know to be true and then use that information to start manufacturing our own brand of luck. You may notice a reoccurring theme in this issue. This issue’s theme is luck. We feel pretty lucky to be here at all.

It’s time for us to be more self sufficient as a community. If we make a few small changes to our spending habits, I think we can solve a lot of problems that seem unsolvable. What do I mean by that? You’ve probably noticed that some people aren’t doing so well lately, We have people who can’t earn enough money to cover basic living expenses. We have people voluntarily consuming poisons so dangerous you might as well call it Russian Roulette. We’ve got young people committing serious crimes seemingly without remorse. It’s as though they have lost faith that the world is a fair place and that good decisions lead to good lives.

We’ve got small businesses out here with margins so slim they can barely cover their rent let alone pay employees. And we have political parties out here telling us we should donate money or face even worse conditions if the wrong people get elected. I don’t know about you but I don’t think political decisions should be made based on how much money is spent on a campaign. We shouldn’t be choosing leaders based on how dedicated they are to raising money. Obviously this is NOT a logical way to make decisions.

The truth is we vote with our dollars, not just by donating to campaigns but also by where we spend every penny of our money. Have you ever stopped to think about how much of your paycheck stays inside your city versus how much is going to giant monopolies and corporations?

What if I told you that if you made a conscious effort to buy the things you need from locally owned businesses it could drastically change all of the aforementioned issues? We need to feed our community with our resources and starve those who seek to keep us over-leveraged and dependent on outside forces. If we become more self sufficient it will create jobs, foster a more connected community, create a social safety net and quite literally save lives.

Weekly Volcano is about introducing you to the people in our community doing inspiring work whether that is with music, art, entrepreneurship, non-profit work or standing up for what is right even when it’s unpopular.

I hope you subscribe to the Happy Friday Newsletter so we can talk directly to you without algorithm coming in between us. We have also launched some fun mini-shows to introduce you to people from our community and give you a glimpse into places you may have never seen. Make sure to follow us on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Last month we relaunched TACOMA ART BUS after taking a 7 year hiatus. We drove a bus full of people around to several local businesses and artists. We plan to do this monthly and make a TV show out of it. That’s not all we are doing but that’s all you’re getting out of me this month. Stay tuned, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Please support local businesses and ESPECIALLY the ones who advertise with us, Don’t forget to read the ads!
