Tacoma Distillery Festival: A Spooky Spirit Tasting to Support the Arts!

By Anne Howard

WHAT: Tacoma Distillery Festival

WHEN: Saturday, October 28, 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: The historic Tacoma Armory

WHY: To benefit arts access and education programs

Northwest distilleries will sample their products and bottles will be available for purchase alongside seasonally spooky activities. Meow you’re talking! This is a 21+ event and requires valid ID for entry.

Tickets are $45 in advance, $55 at the door, and $10 for designated drivers. Each full-priced ticket includes six tasting tokens and a commemorative souvenir shot glass. Designated driver admission includes complimentary non-alcoholic beverages.

Guests are encouraged to come in costume to participate in a costume contest. The contest will be judged by a fa-boo-lous panel that includes Fred Novak of “Fred Finds,” The Weekly Volcano’s fashion segment. The best costumes will win prizes!

Throughout the day, Pat Cully will give ‘em pumpkin to talk about, carving up a giant 250-pound pumpkin live on stage. His artistry is awe-inspiring and sure to delight.

Tacoma Armory will be transformed into an eerie-sistible array of craft liquor tastings, snacks, and local artist vendors. Distilleries will share sample tastings, while The Bottle Shop will offer full bottles for purchase to take home.

Participating distilleries: Chambers Bay Distillery, Escalante Spirits, Mastrogianni’s Distillery, Nightside Distillery, Old Soldier Distillery, Quartz Mountain Distillers, Whidbey Island Distillery, Wohlfert Craft Distilling, Zzaphoria Spirits

Vendors: Alpenglow Cocktail Company, The Dusty Lamp, Gelato Society, Nature’s Elements Co., Texier Chocolate, Your Tea Queen

Tacoma Distillery Festival isn’t just about the boo-ze, it also happens to be a benefit event to support the work of Tacoma Arts Live’s arts access and education programs. These are essential programs for our community, because they provide students with opportunities for creative self-expression, social growth through group activities, and arts-based skill building. Creative expression is necessary to support individual growth and strengthen collaborative communities.

Tickets to the Tacoma Distillery Festival are $45 in advance, $55 at the door, $10 for designated drivers, and are on sale now. To reserve tickets, call Tacoma Arts Live Box Office at 253.346.1721, visit Tacoma Armory in person at 1001 S Yakima Ave., or go to TacomaArtsLive.org.

Why we need more trees

“Tacoma needs trees. We have the lowest tree canopy coverage of any city in Western Washington, and those trees are concentrated in parks, steep slopes, and wealthier/whiter neighborhoods. Parts of the city with more social and economic opportunity benefit from 15% more tree coverage than other areas, which is a big deal when the overall city average is only 20%! We are trying to change that, and this map shows the progress we can make when we have broad-based community support. Read more here.” - Tacoma Tree Foundation

Grant dollars are seeding the urban forestry push in Washington

As climate change reveals the importance of urban trees, residents in a Tacoma neighborhood with sparse canopy coverage are breaking ground themselves. CLICK HERE TO READ FULL STORY

Hilltop park renamed to better reflect community values

A park in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood has a new name, one that community members feel better reflects their history and values.

Edna Travis Park is the new name of the site formerly called McCarver Park, located on the property of Edna Travis Elementary in the Hilltop. The name honors the late Hilltop community leader, who served her neighbors for over 60 years.

No, it's not weird that so many people are running for WA lands commissioner

The pool of candidates vying to become Washington's next commissioner of public lands is getting crowded. The number of candidates competing for the job has taken some people by surprise, but those familiar with the role say it isn't that strange to see so much interest in the position – even if voters don't always know what the state's lands commissioner does.

As of mid-October, seven candidates are in the running for next year’s election, with five Democrats and two Republicans in the mix. Seven people also ran for the position in the 2016 primary. READ FULL STORY HERE
