So Bad Meaning So Good:
A Conversation with Mary Kelsay, Costume Designer for The Thanksgiving Play
By Anne Howard
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Kelsay, costume designer for The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse. The show is open now in Tacoma, produced by Tacoma Arts Live. Mary gave me some insights into the creative process and shared about her career in fashion.
Anne Howard (AH): Please tell us a little bit about yourself!
Mary Kelsay (MK): I’m Mary Kelsay and I am an artist, Indigenous community member (Unangax^) and advocate living in Seattle. I am a garment maker by trade, and I use fashion as a platform to advocate for and raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives.
AH: As a costume designer, what is your vision for the show?
MK: My vision for this show is to keep Indigenous creativity and knowledge in an Indigenous playwright’s play.
AH: What does it mean to you to be part of a show like this?
MK: I was thrilled to hear about the opportunity. I have been wanting to dabble in theater and I’m thankful to have been able to partner with [Tacoma Arts Live] and cast. I am always about uplifting community and supporting other artists. It’s been an amazing experience working with other creatives outside of fashion as well. And of course, costuming a play written by Larissa Fasthorse, hello!!!!!
AH: What’s been your experience so far? What has been challenging? What has been rewarding?
MK: It’s been a welcoming experience the whole way through. Watching this team from the early stages of production has been wonderful to see. While putting together cohesion with the story line was a challenge, getting to know the characters and how they work through each scene over the past several weeks has brought us to the finish line, costuming-wise. That is part of the creative process, though. Most rewarding for me is how the cast is happy and excited about wardrobe choices, including several pieces made by me. As I designer, it’s important for people to be happy and comfortable in what I dress them in.
AH: What can audiences expect from this production?
MK: Audiences should expect a really good laugh or several. The whole production and crew did a really amazing job from start to finish. The actors have worked really hard on this play, and it shows. Theater and performing arts are so magical, and it’s important for the community to support.
AH: How would you describe this production in 5 words?
MK: So bad meaning so good!
AH: Outside of your work on The Thanksgiving Play, what are you working on?
MK: Right now, I am working on several new garments for upcoming fashion shows with Native Max Magazine and Trend Alaska Fashion Show. Check out my website https://www.mekaclothing.com/ and follow me on instagram @meka_clothing. Thank you for supporting Indigenous creatives!

Tonight (Friday, October 20th) There is a big party happening at ALMA celebrating TEN OF US, a project by Fosters Creative.
“On October 20, we invite you to join us at ALMA to shoot the final scene of Ten of Us - which, coincidentally, is also an excuse for us to throw a big party. Our team will be filming all night long, staging some fantastic photo ops, and having the kind of fun that Tacoma nights are famous for. And because we couldn’t decide between a DJ set, an art show, a book release, and an eTc apparel drop… we’re doing all of it.” – Fosters Creative
