    [image] porchfest3

Tacoma Porchfest, a unique and walkable music festival where front porches become stages, happens on Saturday, July 20, from 1-6 p.m. Hosted by the Tacoma Central Neighborhood Council and funded by the Tacoma Arts & Cultural Vitality Division and Tacoma Venues & Events, this year’s festival is twice the size of previous years. The event has grown exponentially, with 200 bands participating, up from 100 last year and 50 the year before.

The festival will feature a wide variety of musical genres, from Dixieland jazz to opera to doom metal, as well as poetry, stand-up comedy, and two open-mic porches for attendees to showcase their talents. Community engagement is at the heart of Porchfest, with partnerships including the Sixth Avenue Business District and various city and local nonprofits. “Kid’s Street” on South State Street will offer family-friendly activities, while performances will take place across 60 porches, including front yards, community gardens, and business parking lots.

Stretching across six blocks by twelve blocks, from 6th Avenue to South 12th Street and Sprague Avenue to Cedar Street, the festival promises a vibrant and chaotic celebration of local talent.

Highlights include a parade featuring the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band, Olympia’s Sticks & Bones, and Tacomarama. With such a diverse lineup and extensive community involvement, Tacoma Porchfest is set to be an unforgettable afternoon of music and fun.

What is most lovely about this event is how non-commercial, inclusive and wholesome the whole thing is.

Discover the iconic Tacoma Museum of Glass where you can admire the stunning cone architecture and Chihuly pieces plus witness glass artisans at work.

The first thing you’ll notice about Tacoma’s Museum of Glass is the ginormous cone rising ninety feet in the air like a futuristic smokestack. Its tilted, stainless steel shingles glisten. The cone was designed by internationally known architect Arthur Erickson. He was inspired by the sawdust burners that once dotted this region of Washington State.

In addition, it contains a glass-blowing studio where visitors can observe glass artisans at work. The cone is regarded as a symbol of Tacoma’s transformation from an industrial center to a cultural mecca.

TV & Film Reviews

FBI Agent Lee Harker is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn, revealing evidence of the occult. Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again.

    [image] longlegs

If you have not seen or heard about Osgood Perkins's latest film, Longlegs, please do yourself a favor, and try to go into this film as blind as possible. It has a marketing campaign that is worthy of an Oscar, but it may leave you with false expectations. For me I found myself trying to calm down my hype as it can lead to having too high of expectations for the film. Even though Longlegs does somewhat fall victim to its excellent marketing campaign, it is still one of the best horror and serial killer films of the decade.

We follow Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), an FBI agent who is brought onto the Longlegs Murders (Nicolas Cage), a cold case that has been haunting the FBI for nearly 30 years. During the investigation, she slowly begins to realize that the case is closer to home than she realizes. The story follows the conventional path of a police procedural but is told through the lens of an arthouse horror, laced with demonic paranoia. Because of its arthouse lens, its storytelling will not be to everyone's taste as the nature of the film is style over substance. Elements of the story are purposely muddled, as it will cause many audience members to be confused, especially in the final act. But if you are someone who loves the horrifying vibes, Longlegs is for you.

From beginning to end, the gripping atmosphere puts a spell on you as you are plunged into this demonic nightmare. From the beautiful, wide-angle cinematography that will have you searching the screen for lurkers in the back of each frame, to the creepy, high-pitched sound design, the film's atmosphere will leave you on edge and disturbed. Even though I would not qualify the movie as particularly scary, it is definitely disturbing.

As for the performances, every performance is quiet and restrained except for one. Some people might qualify this as bad acting, but in Longlegs this is on purpose. Maiika Monroe continues to be the indie scream queen as she gives a restrained performance as Agent Lee Harker. Even though she might initially come across as distant and cold, through her body language she adds layers of unresolved trauma in her performance. Blair Underwood brings a sense of humor with his performance but knows when to be creepy in this film. Kiernan Shaipka, despite having little screen time, delivers a performance that is both funny and disturbing. While Alicia Witt delivers a performance that is as creepy as it is tragic.

However, the performance that will divide audiences will be Nicolas Cage as the infamous Longlegs. He is the only performance in the film that is not quiet and restrained, as he goes full Nic Cage. I found his performance to be unsettlingly creepy through his unhinged screams and his puffed-up face. This unhinge performance will not work with some audience members who will see Nic Cage doing crazy stuff on screen and not Longlegs. However, it should be noted that they went with this crazy approach so they could avoid having comparisons to the cold and calculating serial killers such as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs and John Doe in Se7en. But ultimately, I found him to be one of the most terrifying horror villains of recent memory.

Overall, LongLegs will not be for everyone. It is an arthouse horror that will naturally divide audiences, and its excellent marketing campaign might have set the film up for unrealistic expectations. But if you love Osgood Perkins' previous projects, arthouse horror, and some crazy Nicolas Cage, then I have your new favorite film.

    My Rating: A

  • [image] twisters

    By: Elizabeth Malloy
The disaster franchise of Twister returns to the big screen nearly 30 years after the original film, Twister, made its big screen debut. Its sequel/reboot, Twisters is a fun ride filled with thrills and exhilarating action pieces that will leave you on the edge of your seat as you are plunged into the heart of a tornado. Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos continue to be some of Hollywood's more charismatic rising stars. However, with this praise, it is still littered with all the scientific inaccuracies that you would expect from a Hollywood disaster flick. So if you are someone who hates it when movies are scientifically inaccurate, like my meteorologist father, then you will despise Twisters. But if you are willing to turn off your brain for a few hours, you will enjoy the ride.

  • [image] rainier

For those who like to plan ahead, "Rainier: A Beer Odyssey" will be playing at the Tacoma Film Fest on October 12th, 2024.

This documentary, directed by Tacoma's own Isaac Olsen and produced by The Peterson Brothers, explores the legendary advertising campaign of Rainier Beer. The film delves into the brand's history, from its origins in Seattle in 1878 to its rise as one of the nation's most successful regional beers.

The story takes a significant turn in 1974 when Gordon Bowker, co-founder of Starbucks, and marketing genius Terry Heckler revolutionized Rainier's advertising strategy. Their quirky, self-mocking television ads, crafted through their agency Heckler/Bowker, propelled Rainier to the top of the state's beer market, outpacing national brands like Miller and Budweiser.

"Rainier: A Beer Odyssey" features original, restored outtakes from these iconic ads, presenting them as part of a larger, unseen epic. The film showcases the creativity and innovation behind the campaign, highlighting its lasting impact on both the advertising industry and the cultural identity of the Pacific Northwest.

Don't miss this chance to experience the story of Rainier Beer's groundbreaking ad campaign and its indelible mark on Seattle's history and beyond. Join the screening at Tacoma Film Fest for an unforgettable journey into the world of advertising as art. Read Weekly Volcano story about the film here: https://weekly-volcano.com/452024-cover

  • The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is launching a Targeted Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program to control the unowned cat population in Pierce County, estimated at 130,000 cats. This initiative aims to prevent overpopulation and improve community health.

The need for this program was highlighted by a recent case of a young female cat suffering from severe mastitis, a life-threatening infection linked to uncontrolled breeding. To address such issues, the Humane Society is deploying a Mobile Veterinary Unit to provide spay/neuter surgeries and vaccination clinics directly to local cat colonies.

    [image] humane2

The success of this program relies on community support. Donations to the Mobile Veterinary Unit fundraiser will be doubled by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, maximizing the impact of each contribution.

“Our Mobile Veterinary Unit is key to a healthier future for community cats,” said Ashley Taulbee, Chief Philanthropy Officer. “Support from the community is essential to control the unowned cat population and improve their quality of life.”
