By Lakewood Playhouse
Lakewood Playhouse is excited to announce the final show in our 85th Season, The Niceties by Eleanor Burgess.
The Niceties is being directed by Michelle Matlock making her Lakewood Playhouse directorial debut, and stars Laurie O'Brien and Danielle Shope both returning to the Playhouse after appearing in Love, Loss & What I Wore and Incorruptible respectively.
[image] michelle
Director Michelle Matlock says, “This play's profound exploration of important issues, rich history, and thought-provoking conversations is not only relevant but also serves as a catalyst for fostering meaningful dialogue around race within our community. I look forward to the shared creative process and the collective impact we can make through this powerful production.”
What begins as a polite clash in perspectives, explodes into an urgent debate about race, history and power.
Laurie O'Brien, who plays college professor Janine Bosko says, “The Niceties has challenged me, as an actor, to confront some of my own biases and ingrained ways of thinking. I hope audience members leave the theatre thinking about the ways we humans can listen to differing viewpoints with more open minds and hearts.”
[image] laurie
The Niceties originally premiered at the Huntington Theatre, Boston, before transferring to the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City. The play is a compelling depiction of racial and generational divides as it asks who gets to tell the story of America, and how.
At an elite East Coast university, an ambitious young black student and her esteemed white professor meet to discuss a paper the college junior is writing about the American Revolution. They’re both liberal. They’re both women. They’re both brilliant. But very quickly, discussions of grammar and Google turn to race and reputation, and before they know it, they’re in dangerous territory neither of them had foreseen – and facing stunning implications that can’t be undone.
[image] danielle
Of her experience in rehearsals so far, Danielle Shope, who plays college student Zoe Reed says, “Everyone is really helpful and encouraging. We're able to have honest conversations about the topics in this show and ask questions that not only help with character development but allows us to learn something new.”
“Burgess generates a verbal whirlwind with a words-per-minute velocity that rivals Aaron Sorkin.” - The Boston Globe
“An articulate expression of #blacklivesmatter anger as well as a Millennial rebel yell.” - The Arts Fuse
“A barnburner of a play… One of the best plays I’ve seen about who gets to tell the story of America, and how.” - The Washington Post
The Niceties runs for ten performances only from May 31st-June 16th. Each performance will be followed by a talkback about the play and its themes.
Get your tickets now to be a part of the conversation! For tickets please call 253-588-0042 or visit www.lakewoodplayhouse.org. Lakewood Playhouse has a number of discounted tickets for youth groups and schools, please call the box office for details.

[image] bob shano
On Saturday, the 25th of May, Bob Shano, author of the explosive new book Never Too Old For War, will be at the Dupont Public Library for an in-person book discussion. Shano, a U.S. Army Vietnam-era veteran, returned to the ranks after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as an Infantry soldier and completed three combat tours—two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan—before being mandatorily retired at age 62. By all accounts, he is the oldest person ever to serve in the Regular Army as an Infantryman in a war zone. His book has been called a "must-read" for anyone interested in a “brutally honest chronicle” of military history and an authentic boots-on-the-ground first-hand account of America’s Global War on Terror. The Dupont Public Library is located at 1540 Wilmington Drive in the city’s business district. Shano will be there between the hours of 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm. His book is available for sale on Amazon. For more information, contact the event organizer, Ms. Zena Yeatman, at (253) 548-3326.

By Kimberly Swetland
According to a press release from The Tacoma Stars, “The Tacoma Stars will kick off a new chapter in their history when they begin play in the USL League Two and the Galaxy women’s team starts USL W League competition in the coming weeks at Bellarmine Stadium in Tacoma. League Two allows top pre-professional players from across the United States and Canada the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level while maintaining their college eligibility.”
“This marks the return of pre-professional soccer featuring some of the best collegiate and amateur soccer players, both from the United States as well as international leagues. The Stars will compete in the Western Conference of League Two, and in the Northwest Division. Opening Day is May 19 at 2 pm against the League Two Champion Ballard FC.”
“When the Tacoma Galaxy take the field beginning this month, they will represent the highest level of women’s soccer in Pierce County… The Galaxy will compete in the Northwest Division of the USL W League and elevate the reach of women’s sports in the region. The Galaxy are led by head coach Scott Ford. Opening Day for the Galaxy is May 26 at 2 pm vs. United PDX.”
Head of the Tacoma Stars franchise is owner Lane Smith, whose connection with soccer in the South Sound dates back to the Tacoma native’s days a player at Lincoln High School. The Stars are coached by Liviu Bird. Smith said that in 2026 the World Cup is coming to Seattle. Six games are going to be happening in Seattle and King County. One morning Smith woke up and looked around and realized there wasn’t high-level soccer anymore in Tacoma. “…There are six World Cup games that are kind of like six Super Bowls coming to the Seattle area,” so he thought, “we need to have some high-level soccer back in Tacoma.”
The announcement of the Stars and Galaxy returning to Tacoma was made at a press gathering on Friday, May 10th at Bellarmine Prep’s Memorial Field in Tacoma, where both teams will play home games starting this spring. The event featured players from both teams and speeches from owner Lane Smith, U.S. Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, Deputy Mayor John Hines, Bellarmine Prep President Kelly Goodsell, Athletic Director Kevin Meines, and several others.
Smith says, “there’s been a tremendous amount of people that’ve helped me incubate this on the Women’s side especially when I point to the Guardians of the Galaxy. So, we have some prominent Pierce County folks that are helping to guide the women’s program.”
The women’s team is going to be wearing the iconic Rainiers patch in conjunction with a sponsorship by The Tacoma Rainiers.
Now, Tacoma will host two new semi-professional soccer clubs: the men’s Tacoma Stars program in League Two of the United Soccer League (USL) and the Tacoma Galaxy, a women’s team in the Northwest Division of the USL W League.
“Sports has always been an integral part of our city’s identity and our own Tacoma’s Stars have an iconic history in our community. These teams will undoubtedly add to the vibrancy of our local sports scene and provide yet another avenue for residents to engage, compete, and excel,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards.
The long-term hope is that both teams will find a home in the USL.
A '253 Season Ticket Package' is available for $253, providing access to all USL2, USLW, and Tacoma Soccer Center indoor soccer events in 2024, along with a scarf. Single game and season tickets, along with additional information and game dates, are available on their website: Tacoma Stars.

You've asked how you can support our SAVE THE GRAND campaign at an event. Now is your chance!
The Grand Cinema, in collaboration with Cinema for Good, is thrilled to announce an upcoming film festival called the "Merylthon," celebrating the career of actress Meryl Streep. The event will be held from June 14th to June 16th at The Grand Cinema in Tacoma, Washington. It is part of the cinema's broader “Save the Grand” fundraising campaign, which seeks to raise enough money to purchase ownership of the building.
The Merylthon will feature five iconic Meryl Streep films over three days: On Friday, Doubt (2008) and Death Becomes Her (1992); on Saturday, She-Devil (1989) and The Devil Wears Prada (2006); on Sunday, a rare public screening of the "unstreamable" A Cry in the Dark (1988) paired with a panel discussion. Friday and Saturday night’s screenings are billed as double-features with the titles “Doubt Becomes Her” and “She-Devil Wears Prada”.
The Merylthon is designed not only to entertain but also to spark discussion about the impact of Meryl Streep’s long and varied career. Following Sunday’s screening of A Cry in the Dark, there will be a panel discussion examining the film through the lens of modern-day cancel culture and media sensationalism.
The first Merylthon was conceived as a nonprofit fundraising event in San Francisco, but it has since taken on a life of its own. It is now produced by Cinema for Good, which aims to provide novel, turn-key film festival programming to our vital repertory cinemas. Cinemas are traditionally one of the biggest drivers of foot traffic in the local business districts they anchor.

Thelma
PG-13 / Comedy-Action
[image] thelma
Thelma takes the classic elderly in distress trope and turns it on its head, as 94-year-old June Squibb plays Thelma, a grandmother who is on her own mission-impossible quest to reclaim the money that was scammed from her. The film is as heartwarming as it is funny as we witness Thelma go on a city wide rampage. Yet within this action comedy, it does not shy away from fears and anxieties of aging, with delicate care. Overall, a very fun movie that you should definitely take your grandparent to see.
Coming to theaters June 21st.
Porcelain War
Documentary
[image] porcelain war
Porcelain War is an essential war documentary highlighting the plights and struggles of artisan citizens having to take up arms in war-torn Ukraine. It is a powerful testament of citizens defending their country and culture. However, this documentary feels limited in scope. I wanted to see a bit more of the side of ordinary citizens and moral struggles they face fighting in a war. So, it was surprising to see this documentary not go that route, and especially considering this won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Overall, a very well made documentary that I wanted more out of.
Coming soon to theaters.
In a Violent Nature
Horror/Drama - Unrated
[image] violent nature
In a Violent Nature is not going to be for everyone, but if you are a fan of classic slashers like Halloween and The Nightmare on Elm Street, then this movie is for you. Even though it doesn’t do anything revolutionary for the genre, it is still a fun watch with some brutal kills that will make all of us sickos cheer and moan.
Coming to theaters May 31st.

[image] babes
By Elizabeth Mulloy
Comedy // Rating: R
Why is it that in so many comedies, the main character is a perpetual child with no self-awareness and a complete disregard for other’s personal space and feelings? It is a tiring trope that will sadly be the decisive factor for those who watch Pamela Adlon's latest feature, Babes, as it will test your endurance.
Babes is a pregnancy comedy about Eden (Ilana Glazer) who finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand. After learning about the tragic passing of the baby's father, she decides to keep the child and go through the miracle or some might call the curse of pregnancy, with her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau) at her side. This basic concept creates a surprisingly heartwarming comedy about the miracle of life, however, it has one big hurdle that will make or break the audience.
Eden is an obnoxious, immature, woman-child, who is not prepared to be a mother. And the worst part is that the movie is oblivious to it. Her character views being a mother as cute and trendy. Then when paired with her loud personality, it creates a very painful and frustrating movie experience.
Thankfully, in the final act of the movie, Eden finally grows up, which leads to a surprisingly heartwarming conclusion.
[image] babes2
Much of that warmth comes from Michelle Buteau, Dawn, who had no right to be as good as she was. Her performance is filled with warmth and kindness. Yet with her kindness, she has layers of struggle as she deals with post-partum depression and parenthood. Buteau was truly the heart of this movie.
Ilana Glazer's portrayal of Eden is frustrating, as she is wasted by her annoying character. The script's forced attempts at humor often result in cringe-inducing moments. However, when she relies on her natural comedic talent, she shines, especially in scenes opposite Buteau where their chemistry elevates the movie.
Overall, Babes is not going to be for everyone. Enduring Glazer’s character becomes a litmus test for enjoyment, which is regrettable considering how close the movie comes to greatness. With a less irritating central character, Babes could have achieved the greatness it aspired to be.

[image] apes1
By Elizabeth Mulloy
Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he's been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
In an age of tried franchises, Planet of the Apes managed to reinvent itself in the 2010s as one of the most underrated trilogies in recent memory with Rise, Dawn, and War of the Planet of the Apes. Now that Caesar’s trilogy has ended and the apes now rule the world, the Planet of the Apes franchise is taking a step in a new direction, under the guidance of Wes Ball. Even though, you can feel the void left by Andy Serkis and Matt Reeves, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes manages to speak on its own terms.
Director Wes Ball and writer Josh Friedman build upon the groundwork that Caesar Trilogy built as it expands the world of the apes. This sequel knows that Earth belongs to the apes as its own set of rules and ethics as human civilization rots away. Through this framework, Ball and Friedman cleverly craft a science fiction adventure that is visually sprawling and epic in scope but grounded with its simple story layered with social and political themes.
The tale of Kingdom is set many generations after the events of War, where we follow a young chimpanzee named, Noa (Owen Teague), trying to get his clan back from the self-proclaimed emperor Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), who has twisted the words of Caesar for his purposes. Along the way, Noa meets many characters including Raka (Peter Macon) a philosophical orangutan who teaches the original words of Caesar, and Mae (Freya Allan) a human who is hiding mysterious secrets. This trio explores this new world both physically and philosophically as cultural and political ideals clash. This framing is a perfect way to portray the themes of the Planet of the Apes Franchise. From the theory of evolution to the philosophical idea of what makes a good leader, Kingdom masterfully explores these themes and many more in its story.
[image] apes2
As with all of the films in this reinvented franchise, the visuals are breathtaking. The visual effects are outstanding as the lines between what is real and what is made by a computer begin to blur. The rendering of the apes is beautiful as their faces are lively and filled with emotional intrigue. This intrigue is perfectly portrayed by the ensemble of this film, especially from Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, and Peter Macon. These apes are set in the stunning backdrop of human civilization withering away through impressive and immersive camerawork from cinematographer Gyula Pados. Then when these impressive visuals are paired with a score that is in line with the original 1968 film, it creates an immersive experience like no other. Even though, it is a shame that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will most likely lose the Oscar to Dune Part Two for Best Visual Effects, the franchise has been overdue for that kind of honor.
Overall, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is an excellent continuation of a franchise that both honors its predecessors, while also speaking on its town terms. I can’t wait to see where Director Wes Ball takes this franchise next as it is clear a new war between humanity and the apes is beginning to brew.

Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver
[image] rebelmoon
Action/Adventure | Rating: PG-13 | Now Streaming on Netflix
The rebels gear up for battle against the ruthless forces of the Motherworld as unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge — and legends are made.
Why oh why did I subject myself to the pain of this god-awful movie? Part 1 was filled with the worst characteristics of Zack Snyder. From his overuse of slow motion to the most hamfisted dialogue you can imagine, it was a trainwreck. Now with Part 2, Synder has decided to double down on his worst characteristics and add more pointless slow-motion and even worse dialogue. But what is even worse is that the story for Part Two makes no sense as it lacks all bounds of internal logic. It plagiarizes Akira Kurasawa's masterpiece, Seven Samurai, so much so that Kurasawa should be resurrected so he can sue Snyder into oblivion. All of the characters are clearly copy pasted from Kurosawa's masterpiece but lack the urgency and unique characteristics that made Kurosawa’s so memorable. Furthermore, Kurosawa's actors actually gave a damn with their performances, unlike the forced and regretful performances seen in Rebel Moon. The action pieces are messy as they are filled with eye-rolling slow motion and stupid battle tactics. And by the end of the entire movie, you wonder why on earth the empire was obsessed with this stupid town. Like can you not get wheat from another world or can you just blast the town from space and start a new colony there? This works when it takes place in feudal Japan, but not in an intergalactic empire. Hopefully, this trainwreck will finally tell Hollywood to stop giving Snyder money to do whatever he wants.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
[image] ministry
Spy/Action/Comedy | Rated: R | Now In Theaters
In 1940, Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming form a clandestine combat organization for Britain’s military that changes the course of World War II and prefigures the modern black ops unit through its unconventional and entire warfare against the Nazis.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a simple, yet fun silly movie about the Brits breaking the rules of warfare to end the terror of the Nazi U-Boats. It has a straightforward story that plays out like a standard heist flick with all the tropes associated with it. It executes this simple premise well with fun action pieces, a funny and charismatic ensemble, and brutal kills of those Nazi shits. I just wished the characters felt vulnerable as they felt invincible throughout the entire movie's runtime. Overall, a fun movie that will make Dad’s all around the world very happy.

Boy Kills World

Action/Thriller | Rating: R | In Theaters (difficult to find in Theaters/can order at home)
When his family is murdered, a deaf-mute named Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.
Boy Kills World is a fun, edgy, action comedy/thriller when there isn’t that annoying, Mortal
Kombat voiceover. When the voiceover of our mute character is present it irritated me as I found it annoying and forced into the script. However, when Boy Kills World allows its action pieces to speak that is when it becomes an incredibly fun movie. The action pieces are the definition of edgy as they are filled with brutal kills and ridiculous fighting styles that are wildly entertaining.
Overall, this is a fun movie once the Mortal Kombat voiceover isn't talking, and the action takes over.

Hundreds of Beavers
[image] beavers
Comedy/Action | Now Showing at The Grand Cinema | NR - Violence
In the 19th century, a drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero and become North America’s greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers.
If you have ever wanted to see a live-action cartoon done perfectly, I recommend Hundreds of Beavers. Hundred of Beavers is a simple story of a drunken applejack having to become an animal trapper to survive after beavers destroyed his cidery, through the medium of a classic Saturday morning cartoon. With little dialogue, Hundreds of Beavers shows its story through classic slapstick and physical comedy that feels in line with works such as Looney Toons and Tom & Jerry. It is a mastery of this comedic medium, perfectly showing the power of show don’t tell. Hundreds of Beavers is easily one of the funniest movies of the decade, and I can’t wait to see what Mike Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews come up with next.

The First Omen

Horror/Supernatural | Rating: R
When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.
Move out of the way Immaculate, The First Omen shows you how to do a catholic pregnancy horror. The Omen franchise has been around since the mid-70s, and since its conception, it has struggled to recreate the magic of the original until now. The First Omen not only captures the frightening horror of the original 1976 film but surpasses it. From the chilling opening scene to the unsettling birth of the Anti-Christ, a sense of dreaded ambiance fills the screen through unsettling images and unique sound design. Then when paired with an outstanding performance from Nell Tiger Free (future scream queen), you have one fantastic horror movie from first-time director Arkasha Stevenson. I highly recommend it.

We’re happy to announce today that the name for a future 12-mile trail in Pierce County will honor the people who have lived on and stewarded the land for centuries: the Puyallup People. Meet the spuyaləpabš Trail. The word spuyaləpabš is the Lushootseed name for the Puyallup People, translated as “people from the bend at the bottom of the river.” Our SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County will build 8 miles of the trail, with the remainder built by the cities of Tacoma and Fife. The trail will pass through the tribe reservation and feature original art by Coastal Salish artists. Wondering how to pronounce spuyaləpabš? The Puyallup Tribe of Indians created a video to help since the Lushootseed alphabet and sounds are different than English: bit.ly/SR167TrailName

[image] uw strike
By Kimberly Swetland
Thousands of University of Washington teaching assistants went on strike Tuesday after their union and university officials failed to agree on future wage increases. The union, United Auto Workers Local 4121, said its members nearly unanimously authorized the strike last month. This strike coincided with on-campus protests for Palestine. By Monday, the union and the university had held 19 bargaining sessions, agreeing on all but one of the 37 contract provisions. The university offered an 8% base salary increase by July 2025, while the union demanded 12%.
The union represents 6,000 students who work as research and teaching assistants, tutors, and predoctoral instructors. They set up picket lines at five locations on the Seattle campus and organized a 1 p.m. rally at Red Square. The union argues that wage increases are necessary to keep up with Seattle's high cost of living and to make UW competitive with other universities. Currently, base wages for student employees are under $2,700 per month, which is insufficient for most students. UW student workers earn an average of $23,500 annually ($1,958 monthly), while their counterparts at similar institutions make about $3,400 monthly.
Negotiations continued late into Monday and resumed on Tuesday. Bargaining began in February and became contentious on May 2 when UW accused several union members of "harassing and intimidating" the dean and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences. Union members allegedly occupied Dean Dianne Harris’ office area for hours, chanting, "Shut it down," and knocking on her office door. The crowd's behavior became "increasingly confrontational," according to an unfair labor practice complaint filed by UW assistant vice president of labor relations Banks Evans on May 9.
Sally Clark, UW’s vice president for campus community safety, called UW police to escort Harris and other staff out of the building. Evans alleged that union members engaged in threatening behavior and failed to bargain in good faith, requesting they sign an apology letter and pay for any damages. In response, the union criticized the university for involving the police against students "engaging in protected union activities."
In June, about 2,400 UW research scientists and engineers, also represented by the same union, went on a nine-day strike. Their new contract included a 33% increase in minimum pay and future wage increases tied to the cost of living. A deal was reached just hours after the student employees went on strike, resulting in a new contract with a 35% increase in minimum pay by 2026, the largest increase won by the bargaining unit. The contract also includes hourly wage increases, increased childcare reimbursements, improved health coverage, and first-time paid leave for immigration appointments and hearings.
The union announced a tentative agreement with the university shortly before 9 p.m. on X (formerly Twitter). Union members will vote from noon Wednesday to 7 p.m. Friday on whether to ratify the agreement, pausing the strike during this period. Only Academic Student Employees are part of UAW Local 4121; other students who are hourly employees or in work-study positions are not included. Per university policy, many students are limited to working 19.5-20 hours per week during terms and up to 40 hours between terms, making it difficult for them to cover living expenses without taking out loans, cutting corners, or working second jobs.

The history of Sound to Narrows
By Sam Ring, winner of the first Sound to Narrows
The Sound to Narrows (S2N) road race was created by The News Tribune sports reporter Dick Kunkle. Just how he conceived this idea is open to speculation.
We do know that he fostered the idea from the Bay to Breakers (B2B) race in San Francisco that was sponsored by the San Francisco Examiner newspaper. That race had a lengthy history, as 1973 was the 63rd edition of the race. Read More

By Brianna Aratin | Haunted Farmers Market
Hey, have you heard? A brand-new market has emerged in Tacoma and it's blowing up. The Haunted Farmers Market is a haunted themed market meaning their vendors sell spooky art, ghost everything, taxidermy, crystals, paintings, nature items, witchy apothecary and more except for the normal farmers and food trucks involved, but even those are sometimes themed!
[image] haunted1
The Haunted Farmers Market is now nestled in the South Tacoma Business District right next to the very fitting Church Cantina. What makes this market so incredibly unique is the fact that this traditional, untraditional market is a year-round market with 60 rotating vendors. The idea of having it also be a farmers’ market was so genius, the customers would want to come back every time just to get their favorite farm products without getting bored of the same themed vendors. The HFM will set up every other Saturday, except for October, when it will be every Saturday for the Halloween season.
[image] haunted2
HFM even has a podcast team coming in July to cover paranormal stories from the HFM attendees and you're in for a treat during the October markets.
[image] haunted3
HFM just launched in March and has already accumulated almost 20,000 followers from all over the US. Their social media isn't just all Haunted Farmers Market talk, they also cover true crime, missing people, haunted places, scary stories and more, making it fun and interactive for more than just Washington.
[image] haunted4
Some visitors have reportedly traveled for hours and others from outside the state have plans to come and visit just to attend the market. One family even travelled three hours to attend the market in celebration of a birthday and their car broke down, but that didn't stop them. They took an uber the rest of the way from the mechanic and made it for a very fun time.
[image] haunted5
Most of the feedback for the market has been the demand to make it bigger. People are having so much fun that they want to explore for longer. There are already early plans from the HFM to expand it to another 60 vendors across the street, as well as possibilities of moving to an even bigger venue.

If you're into the spooky and the kooky or are just curious about what this market has to offer you'll need to check it out. Their hours and dates can be found on their social media or website:

Let's Meet the Maker: Brianna Aratin
[image] brianna
Hi, my name is Brianna Aratin, and I just moved to Washington state about 6 months ago from San Diego. Although we didn't want to ever leave San Diego, it was no longer affordable for us and what we had in mind for our future. I had never lived in another state before. I chose to be in WA because my parents moved here nearly 5 years ago.
In San Diego, I was always an entrepreneur. I always had some sort of company or Etsy shop. I even started a couple companies for some famous influencers. I had never gone to college; I just somehow always knew what to do. I would say my greatest strength is problem solving and my second is passion. If you tell me to do something I've never done before I'll figure it out.
When I got to Washington, I naturally started to compare it to San Diego. Where is my new hang out spot? Where is my go-to food spot? Where will my fitness and hiking be? I noticed that this city was slower paced than San Diego and had a lot less to do. My mind was racing with ideas of how I could do this or open that or start this.
I am obsessed with true crime, Halloween, horror everything, scary movies. ghost hunting, you name it. I had remembered going to a market about a year ago and it was witches spooky themed. All their vendors were all dark and spooky. I had no idea a market like that could ever exist. I was blown away by the uniqueness. I wanted to tell the whole world about it.
The Haunted Farmers Market started off as a joke to a friend that very quickly turned into a reality, but in Washington I had no friends, no connections, no idea how to start a market or anything that it needed. I didn't even know if Washington had any vendors that I might need. So, I first came up with a name with the help of my family: ‘Haunted Farmers Market,’ so genius! I needed to make this market unique enough for people to want to come back every time, so I made a farmers market infused haunted maker market and made the vendors rotate so people will need to come back to see what the market might have that date. People love getting fresh produce and farm products at markets.
I filed for the LLC late January and after 2 days of poking around online, meeting connections, and talking to anyone I could, there was a line waiting to sign up on a website that didn't exist yet. Luckily, I knew how to start a website and create content. I had the website up and running within 2 days. The first week I received over 70 applicants. I couldn't believe I was accepting applications and even getting paid. I was so honored that people trusted me.
I was reading a bunch of ‘how to start a farmers market’ guides online and was scared when I read, "give yourself at least a year to plan everything out." I wanted to launch my market this year during market season in March. I wasn’t waiting a year. I met up with vendors, I attended small business meetings, but who helped me the most was the city of Tacoma. They loved my idea so much. They were excited to introduce anything fun that was open to the public. Our original location was supposed to be the Stadium District, but it didn't work out. I had a full vendor list for our grand opening on March 30th with no location. I was so scared people were going to think that I was disorganized. We worked really hard with the city to put our brains together to find a new home for us. They knew the city better than I did, so they sent me the location in south Tacoma. I was so happy to get this spot. I felt a lot more welcomed by the surrounding businesses than I did in North Tacoma. Our permit arrived 3 days before the grand opening! It was pretty crazy.
I am now the proud owner of a brand-new farmers market with my dream theme and had it launched within a month and a half with extreme rapid growth.
