    APRIL 28-29, 2024

Tacoma, WA-Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for the first show of its 2024/2025 season, the hilarious British comedy, One Man, Two Guvnors. This production will be directed by Brett Carr.

Auditions will be held Sunday, April 28th and Monday, April 29th at Tacoma Little Theatre (210 N I Street, Tacoma WA 98403). Audition appointments will be set starting at 6:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm on Monday. Callbacks will be held on Thursday, May 2nd at Tacoma Arts Live. Brighton, England. 1963. Change is in the air, and Francis Henshall is looking to make his mark. Fired from a skiffle band and in search of work, he finds himself employed by small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother, herself in love with Stanley Stubbers who, in turn, becomes our hero’s other 'guvnor'. Fighting a mounting sense of confusion, Francis goes out of his way to serve both bosses. But with the distractions of a feminist book keeper, a self-important actor, and select members of the criminal fraternity (not to mention his own mammoth appetite) to contend with, how long can he keep them apart? Richard Bean’s hilarious comedy received 5-star reviews from every London newspaper and was the hit of the 2012 Broadway season.

Tacoma Little Theatre encourages performers of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities and expressions, and performers living with disabilities to audition. Roles available are: Stanley Stubbers (male identifying, 20s-30s), Rachel Crabbe (female identifying, 20s-30s), Harry Dangle (male identifying, 40s-60s), Charlie Clench (male identifying, 50s-60s), Lloyd Boateng (male identifying, 30s-50s), Pauline Clench (female identifying, 20s-30s), Alan Dangle (male identifying, 20s-30s), Dolly (female identifying, 20s-40s), Alfie (male identifying, 18 and up), Gareth (male identifying, 18 and up), and Ensemble (male and female identifying, 18 and up). The role of Francis Henshall has been already cast.

Auditioners are asked to be familiar with and prepared to read from the monologues and sides provided on Casting Manager (printed copies will be available at the audition). If you desire, you may also prepare a short comedic monologue (no longer than two minutes).

All actors cast receive a travel reimbursement up to $150.00.

    (Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure)

    By Kimberly Swetland

In a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles brought about by nuclear decimation, citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants and bandits.

Over 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse devastates America, a violent raid by bandits on an underground fallout shelter forces one of its residents to set out into a barren wasteland filled with radiation, mutated monsters, and a lawless society of those who remained on the surface.

Fallout proves that video game adaptations can excel in delivering mature, captivating content comparable to acclaimed TV series like HBO's The Last of Us. Catering to both gaming enthusiasts and newcomers, its rich character development and intricate plotlines effortlessly draw viewers into its world. Even if you've never picked up a controller, the richly developed characters and intricately woven plotlines will draw you in effortlessly. The series doesn't rely solely on its gaming roots to carry it forward; instead, it stands confidently on its own merits, offering a fresh & immersive experience for all viewers.

    [image] fallout2

The casting is impeccable, breathing life into beloved Fallout characters and creating instant connections for new audiences. Ella Purnell's portrayal of Lucy MacLean is particularly enthralling, infusing the character with depth and resilience amidst the wasteland's challenges. Aaron Moten as Maximus embodies both strength and vulnerability, showcasing survival complexities. Walton Goggins steals scenes as The Ghoul/Cooper Howard, adding charisma and mystery to the series.

Fallout sets a high standard for game adaptations, not only honoring its source material but also forging its own path in television greatness. For those seeking a compelling blend of action, drama, and thought-provoking themes, Amazon Prime's Fallout is a must-watch.

Hopefully someone will do the same justice for the BioShock franchise. Fallout is rated TV-MA.

    (Drama)

    By Kimberly Swetland

A Jewish family is determined to survive and reunite after being separated in World War II, based on a true story.

Hulu's "We Were the Lucky Ones" presents a gripping narrative of resilience and familial bonds amidst overwhelming adversity. We Were The Lucky Ones is an adaptation of the 2017 book of the same name by Georgia Hunter, inspired by the story of her own family. It depicts the Holocaust from the perspective of the Kurc family, Polish Jews. The story centers on siblings played by Joey King, Logan Lerman, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Amit Rahav and Hadas Yaron and their parents, played by Lior Ashkenazi and Robin Weigert.

Prior to World War II, the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family, lived successful and relatively peaceful lives in Radom. Their success protected them from some of the virulent anti-semitism in the country. Their protection does not last as Hitler's persecution of European Jewry intensified. Some members of the family find themselves in hiding and in concentration camps. Other members of the family managed to escape to France, Brazil, West Africa and Russia. Once the war ends, survivors from the family attempt to discover any living relatives and reunite.

    [image] lucky2

Across eight episodes, the expansive ensemble cast, led by showrunner Erica Lipez, brings the story to life. While the narrative encompasses multiple characters, the perspective primarily follows Halina (portrayed by Joey King) and her musician brother Addy (played by Logan Lerman). As the rise of Nazism looms and their once-prosperous life in Radom falters, the family confronts daunting challenges, prompting some to consider emigration to Palestine.

Going too deeply into each character's journey risks spoilers, yet it's worth noting King's portrayal, showcasing a nuanced performance that eschews melodrama for resilience. Similarly, Yaron as Mila and Lloyd-Hughes as Genek deliver compelling performances, depicting the internal struggles of parents striving to shield their loved ones amidst chaos.

Despite the series' somber tone and portrayal of tragedy, "We Were the Lucky Ones" concludes on a poignant, albeit contemplative, note. The survivors grapple not only with gratitude for their survival but also with a profound sense of loss for the world that once was. While the series acknowledges the Kurc family's story as emblematic of countless others, it does so without sentimentality, eliciting genuine emotional responses from viewers.

In essence, "We Were the Lucky Ones" is a powerful testament to the human spirit's capacity for endurance in the face of displacement, upheaval, and dehumanization.

  • [image] civilwar

    By Elizabeth Mulloy

In a dystopian future America, a team of journalists race against time to reach Washington DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

    Mild spoilers ahead.

In his final directorial feature, "Civil War," Alex Garland transports audiences to an alternate, not-so-distant future America torn apart by civil strife, where we shadow a group of photojournalists navigating the tumultuous crossfire. Despite the trailer's promise of a gripping war narrative depicting America's fragmentation, the film transcends mere conflict portrayal to offer a profound meditation on the desensitization experienced by war journalists and photographers amidst the chaos.

The film's strength lies in its incisive commentary. We witness our journalists thrusting themselves into perilous situations in pursuit of that perfect shot, whether braving sniper fire in open fields or enduring the explosive siege of The White House. The action sequences, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and supported by impeccable sound design, resonate deeply, evoking both exhilaration and fear. The deft editing and direction further intensify the suspense, ensuring a gripping viewing experience. Yet, what truly resonates is the stoicism exhibited by our journalists, even in the aftermath of traumatic events, underscoring the profound desensitization to human violence.

However, amidst the film's praise, there lingers frustration. While "Civil War" purports to be apolitical, it’s very setting, and premise inherently carry political undertones. The film's refusal to confront these themes feels evasive, especially as it subtly comments on real-world groups and events throughout its runtime. The irony is palpable as the film jests at those who remain apolitical during times of war while the film adopts that same stance. It's a case of wanting to have it both ways.

Introducing context to the Civil War's origins could have enriched the screenplay, allowing for an exploration of journalists' internal struggles with their bias and their duty to tell the truth. This, in turn, could have elevated the film beyond entertainment to offer a nuanced reflection on the complexities of journalism. By shying away from this opportunity, "Civil War" misses the chance to delve deeper into its themes, leaving viewers longing for a more robust exploration of the issues at hand.

One aspect that left me frustrated was the lack of depth in the characters. They felt one-dimensional, fitting neatly into archetypal roles: the hardened veteran, the wise old mentor, the eager youngster, and the somewhat clichéd horney sidekick. On paper, that's as far as their development goes. However, one standout performance manages to transcend this limitation.

Kirsten Dunst's portrayal breathes life into her character, elevating her beyond the stereotypical hardened persona. Through subtle nuances and a compelling portrayal of internal conflict, Dunst imbues her character with a sense of humanity struggling to endure amidst the horrors she witnesses. It's a captivating portrayal that adds layers to a character that feels underdeveloped in the screenplay. While the other members of the journalistic team deliver solid performances, they fail to reach the same depth that Dunst achieves.

Yet, amidst Dunst's standout performance, Jesse Plemons deserves recognition for his brief but impactful appearance. In just five minutes of screen time, Plemons captivates with an intimidating yet enigmatic portrayal of a soldier whose allegiance remains uncertain.

Unfortunately, the characters are further hindered by their unintentionally cold actions. One particular instance highlights this: when a character is wounded, his comrades opt to let him bleed out for hours instead of providing aid once they reach safety. This callous indifference to their friend's suffering is infuriating to witness. A narrative where they attempted to save him, only to tragically fail, would have added depth and emotional resonance. Instead, their decision to prioritize capturing his demise for the sake of a photograph feels hollow and devoid of empathy, ultimately detracting from the characters' humanity.

Overall, I am left deeply conflicted with “Civil War”. On one hand, it is a very well-made and entertaining film that dives into the desensitization of journalists through compelling action pieces. But on the other, it feels incredibly hollow with its messaging as it is afraid to take a stance besides just being anti-war. I understand that the film is trying to be apolitical, and I don’t agree it should be.

If you think you got the best chili or salsa recipe, we’ve got a competition for you! The Washington State Chili Cook Off in Ocean Shore is looking for chili and salsa competitors. Competitors have until Monday, April 29th to enter the competition. Winners of the State Chili cookoff competition advance to the World’s Chili Cookoff Competition.

There’s also room for a few more vendors to participate in the Artisan Fair, which could expand to outdoors. The Competition is additionally looking to add more food vendors and food trucks to expand the two-day event’s offerings.

The event will be taking place at the Ocean Shores Convention Center 120 W. Chance a La Mer NW, Ocean Shores WA 98569

    The Event will run 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

    🌶️About the Chili Cookoff

Washington State Chili Cookoff moved to the Washington State coast in 2013. After a hiatus during the pandemic, it returned in May 2023 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. This is a qualifier for the World Championship Chili Cookoff (WCCC) as a sanctioned event of the International Chili Society. For 2024, the event grows to two days on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12 at Ocean Shores Convention Center. The 2023 event brought visitors from Washington state and beyond. Competitors were from Ocean Shores and surrounding counties including King and Pierce.

In 2023, Josh Erickson, winner of Homestyle, competed in the WCCC in September 2023 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He represented the Ocean Shores chili cookoff and Washington state.

Attendees have the opportunity to meet the competitors, learn more about competition chili and taste the entries. People’s Choice voting will be expanded to Saturday and Sunday in 2024.

  • Theme: Baggage Claim

Show Description: The baggage we carry consists of layers of history and experiences that make us uniquely who we are. As artists, that baggage invariably influences our work, sometimes subtly, and sometimes overtly. This exhibit will feature 10 or more new works from Tacoma-area artists based on a non-traditional interpretation of a self portrait. Art pieces should explore and expose the artist's personal baggage (emotional, cultural, socioeconomic, etc.) and turn that baggage literally and figuratively into art.

Your responsibility: Participating artists will be asked to produce a personal work within, or otherwise using an actual piece of luggage/baggage as their starting point. Artists can choose a suitcase supplied by the Organizer, or they may use a suitcase of their choice.

Size of final artwork: Suitcase art pieces should be medium sized, no larger than approximately 24x30 inches. Baggage art will be ideally displayed on the horizontal aspect, on a rotating baggage carousel, inside a stylized airport baggage claim setting. (If an artist simply must use a vertical aspect, show organizers will do our best to accommodate the artist’s vision). However, artwork must be self contained, with no requirement for external power, and must have no trailing pieces that could become tangled in rotating machine parts - Important!

If you would like to participate: Please send your initial submission via email. This must include your name, contact information (email, phone, Facebook and/or Instagram), plus 5 jpg or pdf images of artwork that is similar to what you might produce for this exhibition - the jury will be especially looking for 3D, assemblage work of a conceptual nature. If you do not have work similar to what you would produce for this project, but you would like to be considered, send 5 jpg or pdf images of your best recent work, and a sketch of work that you might produce for this baggage-themed exhibit. Remember to include your name, relevant contact information, and social media links.

Exhibit space: Empty store front with prominent viewing windows in downtown Tacoma.

    (Exact location to be announced)

Exhibit Timing: Shown during Tacoma's Art at Work month, October 2024

    Timeline:

    1. Initial submission: Due Midnight, May 19, 2024

    2. Review of submissions: May 20 - May 26

    3. Artist notification: Artists accepted for participation in this project will be notified by May 27, 2024.

    4. Exhibition date: Opens Sept. 28, 2024 and closes October 27, 2024.

We look forward to seeing your art and ideas!
