The Daffodil Parade is one of the longest running traditions in the Pacific Northwest and the only parade to march through four cities on the same day. And despite the fact that it’s a large 4-city event, it’s also very much a hometown, community-focused happening.
Floats bedecked with daffodils celebrating the region’s agricultural roots. High school bands from around the South Sound. Local businesses and organizations. The Daffodil Queen and her court of princesses. These are the traditional parade elements that have remained steadfast pretty much since 1926.
The parade takes place Saturday, April 6th, and starts in Tacoma at 10:15 am. It next makes its way to Puyallup for a 12:45 pm start time. At 2:30 pm it appears in Sumner, and the last stop is in Orting where festivities begin at 5:00 pm.
Check the website for a parade route map for each city.

Head to Edison Square between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. this Saturday April 6 for the first Caribbean Queens Festival. The free community gathering of women-focused businesses, cuisine, and entertainment celebrates a diaspora of the Caribbean right here in Tacoma.
The event includes a wide-ranging lineup of food, art, and performances spanning countries like Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guam, Mexico, Colombia, and more.
Activities will take place both inside and at the outdoor village in the venue’s back parking lot, which includes the main entertainment stage and kid’s zone. There's something for everyone at the festival.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the community to, perhaps, a different side of the Puget Sound region,” said lead organizer Julie Davidson, president and CEO of The JD Group. “A lot of us are quietly out here doing our thing, and the Caribbean diaspora spans many countries, languages, and cultural groups. We’ve never had a cohesive event of this nature in Tacoma, and we’re really proud to showcase the diversity, texture, and flavors of the Caribbean.”

[image] immaculate
By Elizabeth Mulloy
Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, embarks on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.
Immaculate, directed by Michael Mohan, is a peculiar yet untamed exploration of Catholicism's darker aspects in cinematic form. It occupies a unique space between the jumpscare-centric horror characteristic of Blumhouse and the more nuanced, "elevated" horror epitomized by A24. While it draws from both traditions, it doesn't fit neatly into either category. The film follows Cecilia, a Catholic Nun, who joins a new convent in Italy to care for her ailing sister in faith. As weeks pass, she inexplicably finds herself pregnant, leading many to believe she carries the Son of God.
However, as strange phenomena and unsettling visions unfold, doubts arise about the true nature of her pregnancy. On paper, Immaculate promises a chilling exploration of religious trauma and the intersection of women's bodies with faith. Yet, in execution, it falls short of realizing this potent blend of horror.
In the initial half of the film, tension is primarily manufactured through cheap jump scares rather than allowing the story's natural ambiance to set the mood. These jumpscares feel contrived, lacking originality and failing to evoke genuine fear. However, as the narrative progresses into its latter half, the film begins to leverage its inherent atmosphere to truly horrify the audience.
The transition marks a shift towards a more immersive experience, where the unfolding horrors stem from the organic progression of the story. The horrifying realization of being unwillingly impregnated is terrifying as it is routed in reality. Additionally, when juxtaposed with moments of authentic tension, such as the harrowing escape from captivity in the convent catacombs while undergoing labor, there's an inherent sense of unease that permeates the scene. I just wished the entire film had this momentum that it showed in the film's later half.
The performances in Immaculate offer a varied experience. Sydney Sweeney is inconsistent in Immaculate. She has many moments, especially in the first half, where she is unintentionally funny in what would have been serious and unsettling scenes. However, when she is finally allowed to go full Scream Queen, she kills it. She has this horrifying intensity in these unholy moments that proves she is a perfect match for this genre. Overall, Immaculate is interesting and terrifyingly fun at points, but feels like it is wasted potential.

🍿Damsel (Juan Fresnadillo) 👸
A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
The title of "most likely written by AI" in 2024 undoubtedly belongs to Damsel, a Netflix production that is so undercooked that a dragon would dare not eat it. This film is a colossal failure, lacking in excitement, originality, and substance. Its narrative is painfully predictable and riddled with pretentiousness, making it seem like I had already pieced together the entire story from the moment the first poster and synopsis were released months ago. Despite claiming to break away from the "damsel in distress" trope, Damsel ultimately succumbs to it, failing to deliver on its promise of subversion. Millie Bobby Brown's performance is disappointingly bland, portraying a character that attempts to be different but ends up feeling forced and unconvincing.
Her portrayal lacks the intimidating presence she brought to her role as Eleven in the first season of Stranger Things. The only redeeming qualities of Damsel are its costume design and the visually appealing dragon design. However, these aspects alone are not enough to salvage what is otherwise a forgettable and lackluster movie.

🍿Film Review: Road House (Doug Liman)
Ex-UFC fighter Dalton takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.
On one hand, I appreciate that Road House didn't take itself too seriously and embraced the campiness of its story, which made for an enjoyable experience. However, on the other hand, I'm frustrated by how it spiraled into a chaotic mess. The remake of the 1989 classic, Road House, is a film characterized by tumultuous disarray. Amidst this chaos, there are moments of fun, particularly in the first half. The fight scenes are entertaining, and the chemistry among the cast members adds to the enjoyment. Initially, the film strikes a balance, embracing its campy nature while still maintaining some grounding elements. However, this balance is lost as the movie progresses into its second half. The once-cohesive story and characters are abandoned in favor of poorly executed CGI fights and nauseating cinematography. As a result, what started as an enjoyable romp devolves into a disappointing mess.
The dialogue throughout the movie feels forced and awkward, reminiscent of lines one might encounter from non-playable characters in the Elder Scrolls games. This feeling is exacerbated by the noticeable use of ADR (Audio Dialogue Replacement) throughout the entire film, sometimes even for entire characters. Conor McGregor's acting debut is particularly noticeable in this regard. While his skills as a UFC Fighter are evident, his portrayal outside of fight scenes comes across as a bit cartoonish, making it difficult to take him seriously. Although he seems to be enjoying himself, he stands out starkly from the rest of the cast. McGregor's talents might be better suited for roles as a stunt coordinator or stuntman. On the other hand, Jake Gyllenhaal shines in the movie, carrying it with his natural charm and impressive physique. Despite the poor dialogue, Gyllenhaal manages to infuse his scenes with comedic brilliance. While the rest of the ensemble delivers adequate performances, Gyllenhaal stands out as the highlight of the film.
In general, Road House presents a varied experience. While it has its enjoyable moments amidst the chaos, there are instances where the tumultuous nature of the narrative can overshadow even the most entertaining aspects of the story.

🍿Film Review: Problemista
An aspiring toy designer’s work visa runs out, and a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. Problemista, directed by Julio Torres, left me somewhat lukewarm. While I found merit in its narrative, character development, and the societal critiques it presented, the comedic elements failed to fully resonate with me. Although there were sporadic instances of humor, I felt that the execution often fell short of its potential. One highlight was witnessing Tilda Swinton's portrayal of a fiery Karen, accompanied by Julio Torres in a comedic tug-of-war. These moments provided a delightful contrast to the otherwise lackluster comedic delivery. However, outside of these standout scenes, the film struggled to maintain my interest. In summary, while Problemista boasts strengths in certain aspects, particularly its performances, it ultimately failed to capture my attention due to its inconsistent comedic tone.

The Tacoma Housing Authority is working to improve economic opportunities for families. This is achieved through the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program, which links families to community services to help them reach their goals.
THA also offers educational resources to prepare families for school, as part of their mission to provide the necessary tools for success.
Homeownership is another focus area for the THA. They have several programs to assist people in buying homes and provide information about other local agencies that can help.
The THA also provides free tax assistance to families. This is crucial as tax filing and refunds can be vital for families struggling to meet basic needs. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) can offer financial help, but are often unclaimed.
To ensure eligible households receive these credits, the THA collaborates with Associated Ministries and the Pierce County Asset Building Coalition to offer free tax preparation services. These services are available at the Authority’s Family Investment Center at Salishan on Saturdays during tax season.

Thousands of old bridges across the U.S. are awaiting replacement or repairs after inspectors found them in poor condition
[image] bridge
By Associated Press
After a yearlong closure, a bridge over the Puyallup River reopened in 2019 with a sturdy new span and a brand new name. It even won a national award.
But today, the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge is closed again after federal officials raised concerns about a vintage section of the nearly century-old bridge that carried about 15,000 vehicles a day. It has no timetable to reopen because the city of Tacoma, Washington, first must raise millions of dollars to clean and inspect it.
“It’s frustrating — and hard to comprehend how we got here,” said Ed Wallace, whose Harley-Davidson motorcycle store has lost customers since the nearby bridge was shuttered.
Bridges fulfill a vital function that often goes overlooked until lives are lost or disrupted by a closure or collapse, like that of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday. That bridge crumpled when struck by a cargo ship, not because of poor maintenance. But thousands of others stand in worse shape.
About 42,400 U.S. bridges are in poor condition, yet they carry about 167 million vehicles each day, according to the federal government. Four-fifths of them have problems with the legs holding them up or the arms supporting their load. And more than 15,800 of those bridges also were in poor shape a decade ago, according to an Associated Press analysis.
One of those persistently poor bridges — carrying about 96,000 westbound vehicles daily on Interstate 195 over the Seekonk River in Rhode Island — was suddenly shut to traffic late last year, resulting in long delays as drivers diverted to new routes. In March, the governor announced that the bridge must be demolished and replaced. That could cost up to $300 million and take at least two years to complete.
These closures illustrate a nationwide issue.

By Sound Transit
Today (March 28, 2024), in two separate actions, the Sound Transit Board approved an array of projects to provide better access to the South Tacoma and Lakewood Sounder stations. The projects include new station-supportive bicycle infrastructure, sidewalks and ADA improvements.
Some of the highlights, developed in conjunction with the cities of Tacoma and Lakewood, are:
South Tacoma
New station curb ramps, sidewalk improvements, tactile pavers, PA system and lighting
Approximately six miles of new bike lanes
Additional improvements depending on funding remaining following completion of priority projects.
Lakewood
New station curb ramps, sidewalk improvements, PA system and tactile pavers
Approximately five miles of new bike lanes and transit stop improvements
Additional improvements depending on funding remaining following completion of priority projects.
These improvements were initially conceived, and approved by voters in 2008, as additional parking for the two Sounder stations, but the conceptual projects included options for the Board to select alternative access improvements. Existing parking at both stations is currently underutilized. The surrounding sidewalk network is incomplete and not ADA accessible, and bike access is limited.
Because these project selections were for the voter-approved alternatives in Sound Transit 2 conceptual projects, a supermajority Board vote was required.
The South Tacoma Station Access Improvement Project’s planning estimate is $56 million. The Lakewood Station Access Improvement Project’s planning estimate is $54 million.
Sound Transit’s Sounder S Line train service gives Pierce County residents a dependable, traffic-free commute to and from Seattle. The trip, with Wi-Fi, from South Tacoma Station to Seattle’s King Street Station takes

My latest culinary adventure took me to BAR BISTRO, a place that truly tickles the taste buds and warms the soul with its dimly lit ambiance. The seafood rice pot was a generous bowl of flavors, and the steamed mussels were a clean delight, especially when paired with the creamy sauce that was simply divine. The beef and cheeseburger didn't just meet my expectations; it soared with its standout side dishes and sauces.
[image] bar bistro 2
The pasta dish was a hearty affair with generous chunks of meat, and while the chicken cutlet and meat with cream sauce were mouthwatering, the pickled seaweed's texture was a bit too bold for my palate. However, the crab cake was a showstopper with its crispy exterior and succulent crab meat. For dessert, the creatively presented carrot cake was a sweet treat, and the creme caramel was a consistent hit.

"Giving youth a safe place to shelter, heal, belong & grow"
“The coffee oasis is a one-stop shop for kids in our community who have nobody in their corner.” – Daniel Frederick, Executive Director.
The coffee oasis started in 1997 by Cindy Frederick (co-Founder) and her husband. It was originally started in Bremerton. They were looking for a place in Bremerton to use as a base for outreach to youth who were struggling. They set up the first location as a business and a place where youth could drop in. Word of mouth spread and within a few months there would be 50+ kids showing up for Friday night drop-ins. They now have 5 locations and 80 staff members.
About Coffee Oasis: The Coffee Oasis is a Christian non-profit organization that exists to create pathways of opportunity for youth to be restored in heart, soul, mind, and body. We believe youth are the future of our community, but many are hurting, homeless, and hindered from living their full potential. The Coffee Oasis youth programs offer a place for the community to invest in their future—the youth. We do this through creating safe shared spaces, mentorship, street and school outreach, goal setting, job training, shelter, and crisis services. The only way for our mission to succeed is through the support of the entire community—intentional inter-generational and cross-cultural investment. We accomplish this mission through a sustainable and successful coffee business. The cafés offer a “third place” for the community to gather and buy products with the added value of all profits returning to create opportunities for youth.

The largest network of community newspapers in Washington state has been sold to new owners, following tough financial times.
If you get a local newspaper in Western Washington, chances are is it operated by Sound Publishing. Sound owns more than 40 newspapers across the state, as well as three publications in Alaska. In 2013, it purchased the Seattle Weekly, which has since been operated as an online-only news site. The largest newspaper in its collection is The Everett Herald.
Sound Publishing's parent company, Black Press, has been sold to a partnership between investment groups, as well as Alabama-based Carpenter Media Group. In January, Black Press filed for creditor protection in British Columbia. Similar to bankruptcy proceedings in the United States, the Canadian creditor protection process allows insolvent companies to restructure.

Prominent politicians in Washington are calling for an investigation into overuse of solitary confinement at a federal, privately-run immigration facility in Tacoma after the death of a 61-year-old detainee.
Charles Leo Daniel died on March 7 at the Northwest ICE Processing Center, also known as the Northwest Detention Center. Activists say Daniel died while in solitary confinement and hung himself with a blanket. Tacoma police, however, say there is no known cause of death.
Democratic Washington Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell have now said there should be an investigation into the facility and sent a joint letter to the Department of Homeland Security calling for an end to the “misuse of solitary confinement” in detention centers. U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, also a Democrat, also said she plans to send DHS a letter.
“We are deeply concerned wRead Moreith findings that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to violate its own policies related to solitary confinement,” Murray, Cantwell and several other senators from other states wrote in their letter.

It will be tougher to visit Mount Rainier National Park this summer, but it should be more pleasant.
In a move to improve visitor satisfaction and reduce congestion, the park will implement a reservation system for entry during the peak summer months of 2024. While this change may require a bit more planning, it promises a smoother and more enjoyable experience for all.
Superintendent Greg Dudgeon explained the rationale behind the new system.
“We’ve seen too many frustrated visitors stuck in long lines at the entrance stations, waiting for a chance to explore our beautiful park. By spreading out visitation throughout the day, we hope to alleviate crowding and enhance everyone’s enjoyment,” Dudgeon said.
Reservations for Mount Rainier National Park’s timed entry system for 2024 are available online at Recreation.gov’s website now for the Paradise Corridor and April 1 for the Sunrise Corridor. Additional reservations are available at 7 p.m. the day before arrival for the Paradise Corridor (May 24–June 30, 2024) and the Sunrise Corridor (July 4, 2024). Reservations for August through Labor Day will open on May 1.
Reservations cost $2 and cover one vehicle. They also provide a two-hour window during which you can enter. There is no mandatory departure time set with reservations.
Key details for planning a trip to Mt. Rainier.
Reservation Requirement: Visitors must have a reservation to enter the park between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. via the Nisqually, Stevens Canyon, or Sunrise/White River entrance stations.
Corridor Specifics: Paradise Corridor is accessible from the Nisqually Entrance (via State Route 706) or the Stevens Canyon Entrance (via State Route 123), this corridor will require reservations from May 24 through September 2. Sunrise Corridor entry, via the White River Entrance (via State Route 410), will require reservations from July 3 through September 2.
Booking Process: Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. July dates will be available on Recreation.gov starting February 21, 2024, for the Paradise Corridor and April 1, 2024, for the Sunrise Corridor. August through Labor Day reservations will open on May 1. Additionally, a limited number of reservations will be released daily at 7 p.m. for the following day.
Cost and Entry Window: Each reservation covers one personal vehicle and costs $2. The reservation provides a two-hour entry window. For example, a 9 a.m. reservation allows entry between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., with no fixed departure time.
Exceptions: No reservations are needed for entry before 7 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Visitors with in-park reservations for lodging or camping in either corridor can enter anytime after 1 p.m. on their first day.
