As seen on Kwabi Amoah-Forson’s Facebook
“Something quite significant happened this week as I was awarded the Legacy Dream Award by the University of Washington at the University of Washington Tacoma BSU Unity Breakfast and award ceremony.
And what an honor it was to be highlighted for being a humanitarian, helping others in need locally, domestic and abroad. The goal everyday is simple yet cannot be achieved without discipline and it is, to be a better me today than yesterday and to help another Human Being in need. This motto has led me to places, spaces and accomplishments I only dreamed of.”
Kwabi went on to dedicate his award to victims of violence, poverty and hunger as he dedicates his work for those people.

Neighborhood News:
-
By Stephanie Smith
The school sat abandoned for over a decade with frequent calls for police and fire response and neighbors voiced frustrations with Tacoma School District's nuisance property. Neighbors around Gault Middle School have been frustrated for over a decade and the frustration only gets worse as the building burned for days with very little communication about how to handle the smoke.
City Council Member Catherine Ushka shares her neighbors' frustrations and concerns, particularly around the communication regarding smoke that settled in the Dometop and surrounding neighborhoods.
Ushka is working with the City Manager's office and meeting with Tacoma Public Schools to discuss the smoke being an issue in people's homes for such a long time with no one really saying anything. Her priority is more regular communication across the board. Seeing neighbor’s struggles and some of the posts and comments on Facebook with not enough being said from the city departments to citizens was difficult for her to bear.
Dometop Neighbors Vice Chair Tara Scheidt echoed that some neighbors did feel abandoned throughout the week, with Ushka being a lone voice reaching out from the city trying to provide information and get communication. It was a comfort that she could easily get a hold of Catherine Ushka for her support and assistance.
Tacoma Fire Chief Tory Green recognized and personally apologized for the lack of communication and that the Fire Department fell short of expectations. Instead of talking at the group, he opened up for questions letting the neighbor's concerns guide his information.
The first concern voiced was by Chair Lynnette Scheidt who wanted more information on the smoke from the fire, that many neighbors were having breathing issues and headaches. One woman living near the school passed away, and her heart condition was likely affected by the smoke. Another neighbor was worried, and called the Scheidts for help when his breathing issues worsened, and he ended up in the emergency room. The neighbors talked of headaches, and difficulty breathing, and the smoke seemed stronger in some homes than it was outside.
“All smoke is bad…All fire smoke, whether it's from Gault fire or any house fire is bad. It’s all bad. It’s all chemicals. It’s all stuff you should not be breathing in. It will give you headaches. It will make you sick. It will make you short of breath and it could kill you.” – Tory Green, Tacoma Fire Department Chief.
The presence of asbestos in the building wasn’t the main issue, in this case. The bigger and more unusual problem lay in the settling of the smoke over the neighborhood for an extended period. This was not quickly noticed by on-scene personnel. Chief Green has two important messages.
First, he wants people to subscribe to Tacoma Alerts so you can be notified if there is an emergency in your area. Tacoma Alerts is a system is designed to reverse 911 call to landlines, unless you subscribe for alerts. So, subscribe today. Now. Like, right now. I can wait…
https://www.cityoftacoma.org/government/city_departments/fire/emergency_management/tacoma_s_emergency_notification_system
Done? Good.
Second, Chief Green says if people feel like they are not getting heard or the response they need he would like direct contact. Reach out to him at 253-973-0088 so he can make sure people are getting the information and the help that they need. In the future, the department will send out a notification if a fire is going to burn for a long period and provide updates.
Ushka was visibly upset and frustrated that there was not sufficient communication from the various departments in the City. After hearing that there was a system available to alert residents she was concerned that it hadn’t been used enough and that community wasn’t aware of the Alert.
“Hurts my heart to watch my community suffer over a week and to reach out and think that something is going to happen because as a Council Member when you hear that people are being informed you anticipate action on the other end. I wasn’t even aware that you sent out that alert.” Council member Catherine Ushka.
Ushka was hearing and seeing comments from neighbors that departments were more concerned about staying in their lane and whose job it was, rather than getting the information out. Being unaware of the alert and the fact that she was on the phone all week trying to get communication, all while having just gotten out of the hospital, you could see and hear her frustration.
This might seem, from the outside, like a comedy of errors but in this case, with deadly consequences. Multiple disconnects and broken loops of communication, with one department passing the responsibility to another whose response was basically “Why are you asking us?”. The bottom line is that some response is better than none and the neighborhood was effectively ghosted by the City and departments they count on for guidance.
“The silence was really, really heartbreaking.” -Councilmember Ushka
Let’s hope that going forward the communication is better. It needs to be. Fire Chief Tory Green being there at the Dometop meeting to face the neighbors with Council Member Ushka was a good first step but, the Fire Department shouldn’t bear the full weight of the silence. Other departments and agencies need to step forward, acknowledge their responsibilities, and work more cohesively to communicate safety and health information with residents.
“Let’s figure this out.” Tara Scheidt, Vice Chair Dometop Neighbors

The Tacoma Town Center project, a $300-million project, has stalled once again. The reasons are typical: developers can’t get financing, that leads to delays, permits expired, liens, lawsuits and all the common issues. So what does that mean for the site, and in turn, for Downtown Tacoma?
Though the “Tacoma Town Center” moniker is branding. But maybe in Tacoma it is actually indicative of a desire to make the space operate like the experience of the name.
Ruben Casas points out some “city centers” that we could take a lesson from, Portland’s Pioneer Square, Spokane and Boise too.

The queen and namesake of The Church Cantina, “Church,” has crossed over. She was a huge part of the family and what they named this business after. A recent post of Facebook explains, “We loved her so much. We found church on Halloween on 6th ave in 2012. She was almost 13 and lived longer then we were told when they found cancer in her arm and throat about a year ago. She lived her ultimate best life with us and we treated her like royalty because she was a luxurious princess. 👑 Rest easy lil’ kee. We will miss you so much 🌈 💔”
Show The Church Cantina some love by stopping by to make a toast in her honor.

Tacoma Police Department’s Internal Affairs investigation clearing officers Matthew Collins, Christopher Burbank and Timothy Rankine of most department violations the night Ellis died in their custody. All three officers agreed to resign Tuesday in exchange for $500,000 each.
Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards used the end of the last City Council meeting to address that changes will come to the Tacoma Police Department in the wake of the case.

From the South Tacoma Neighborhood Council:
The Tacoma Police Department now offers a vast collection of crime data that is open and available to the public. Spanning five years and growing, the Tacoma Police Crime Dashboard can compare and contrast data sets by various time periods, by neighborhood, by crime category, and much more. Updated each business day with new data, the dashboard can help you track trends and analyses almost in real-time.
Tacoma Police Dept. update from Lt. Malott (taking over for Lt. Katz): The TPD Homeless Outreach Team is finally reaching full next month. They will have 4 officers and a supervisor. For over a year they have running very short and that has added pressure on the CLOs who have essentially been doing 2 jobs. So we hope to get the CLOs back to their core function of addressing neighborhood and business complaints that are chronic in nature (i.e. problem house, etc).
Also, the department is hiring about 10 civilian staff who are limited commission to assist officers in lower-level calls for service. The Citizen Safety Officers (CSO) will be up and running in April. This will hopefully free officers up for higher priority calls for service and increase response times. Both the the HOT and CSO programs will be administered through Operations and Community Policing.

The Next Move Program believes that all students should have the opportunity to make informed choices about their future. We also believe that personal experiences, such as internships in a chosen career field and a meaningful relationship with a career mentor, can have a lasting impact on a student’s personal and professional journey.
The Next Move Internship Program works with the local community to design meaningful positions for juniors and seniors in Tacoma Public Schools in order to provide each a preview of their professional future. By working alongside employees in a specific industry, students can learn what skills and expertise is needed to be successful in their chosen career field. Internship experiences provide students the opportunity to make informed decisions about their future.
Prospective interns begin by participating in Intro to Internship, a preparatory course where they explore career pathways, write resumes and cover letters, and practice their interviewing, networking, and professional communication skills. After completing Intro to Internship, students are invited to participate in a 90-hour, unpaid internship experience in the community, where they can continue to build their skills and explore their interests. Students typically intern 4-8 hours per week at their site and are supported throughout the entire experience by their Intern host and Next Move Coach.
The next workshop is Jan 24th 6-8pm at The Chamber Office at 950 Pacific Ave, Suite 300

SEATTLE — A new Seattle ordinance that started Saturday is stirring up controversy. Supporters say it will help provide a livable wage for app-based delivery drivers, the ones who bring you take-out and groceries. However, critics say it is going to make those services more expensive.
Seattle City Council passed legislation that goes into effect Saturday. It will require delivery apps to provide a minimum payment for mileage and time worked. The ordinance will apply to all app-based workers who work at a network company that hires more than 250 workers worldwide.

I sit staring into a screen. The clock is ticking. Outside, light is fading. Another precious day is slipping through my grasp. The dust bunnies live on, scurrying about my floor while piles of unpacked boxes jeer at me as if to say they’re never to leave my sight. The ongoing list of to dos builds as I shrink in this overwhelm of all that demands my attention.
I find myself aimlessly scrolling social media, somehow expecting to receive an answer to my inner chaos while continuously feeling worse as I gaze upon the razzle dazzle of others' successful lives.
I can allow this spiral of detriment to gain momentum by feeding it all that I have not accomplished, all the past failed attempts at varied ideas, by looking into the mirror of self-loathing with disgust and play into the belief that I don’t have what it takes to live the life I would like…
Or I can stop myself from falling any further down this disastrous rabbit hole of my own making and realize that I have the power to also create the flip side of this situation.
We all have a great force within called WILL.
The successes that walk amongst us have it mastered.
The effective assertion of willpower comes through your mind. I know it sounds confusing, like what came first - the chicken or the egg?
The thing is, many of us become mentally lazy because it all seems too difficult. We may not know how to properly motivate ourselves to overcome the obstacles at hand.
You know those stories of people finding superhuman strength in times of crisis? All fear flies immediately out the window as pure courage and determination take over.
We must learn to create that momentum for ourselves in our day-to-day lives, not just in the moment when it’s fly or die.
This is where we decide that our lives are worthy of employing a positive change. Choosing to build your mental muscle is the most important workout of your life.
Strong will follows strong desire and you must have a determined mind to activate your will.
It’s a daily commitment, not always easy but simple.
I like to look at it as establishing order in the empire of my mind.
Using auto suggestion aka affirmation has been key to overcoming a whole lot of my own negativity and unproductive habits.
If you’re new to mindset work, it might sound ridiculous that talking to yourself can be the change you need but stop and think about it for a minute. Who actually knows you better than YOU? You are the one with the ability to help yourself and unlock your incredible potential. You are the only one with you 24/7 and you can decide today to make the moments count.
I have effectively changed my thinking tremendously over the years and I always go back to my foundational basics.
I invite you to write yourself an affirmation that holds meaning. Enough to feel some emotion when you say it aloud. A couple I’ve found useful:
I am a highly capable being.
I am the creator of my life.
Make a point of saying your affirmations multiple times a day. You may feel a bit silly at first but if you do this with true intention, I promise it will stimulate your personal power.
Continue this experiment by expanding on your affirmations. Make note of what words feel the most significant to you. The more you feel, the more you energetically charge your words and the quicker results come.
In time, you will find it easier to direct your willpower and as you accomplish tasks, your self-confidence will bloom, and you will trust yourself to take on greater things.
You and I both hold the ability to pop a lid on that rabbit hole and keep the spiral spinning in the direction of our dreams.

With our Front Door Fresh Meal Delivery program, our vision is to bring quality, healthy, fresh foods to the communities of Pierce County so they get the nutrition they need for better health outcomes, especially as it relates to heart disease and diabetes. But beyond just delivering the fresh food to their homes for free, this program is geared to putting together heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly (lower-carb, lower-sugar), as well as culturally appropriate food boxes that include ingredients for full meals along with a recipe for each meal. Ingredients will include fresh local produce, lean meats, and other items. Our partner WSU Pierce Extension Snap-Ed created and tested the recipes to ensure they are appropriate for these special diets, they are easy to recreate for clients, and are something that clients will love to eat. Our ultimate goal is to help lower-income BIPOC households achieve better health, have better management over any conditions they already have, or ward off the potential for these diseases.
The Front Door Fresh Meal Delivery program is a 12-week program that will a choice in fresh, heart-healthy meal options while taking the guess work out on what is best to eat and how to prepare it – as well as the cost involved. Diabetic households receive the food for free, along with free delivery, right where they are at.

WA made a move to address the concerning issue of “stealthing” in sexual intercourse activities. The term refers to the deliberate removal or destruction of a protective device, typically a condom, without the consent of the other individual involved.
WA law currently doesn’t explicitly prohibit stealthing, but House Bill 1958 aims to rectify the gap by establishing a civil cause of action. Under the bill, individuals that have experienced such actions may bring a civil lawsuit against the offending party.
